Allergens on the pack

Wheat and soy sit on nearly every Nabisco label. Milk, egg and peanut come and go with the flavor. The label says which, in a fixed place.

Nine allergens the law names

US law singles out nine foods as major allergens. Eight were named in 2004 and sesame joined them in 2023. A packaged food that contains one of them has to say so in plain words.

This law identified eight foods as major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Food Allergies, read 4 October 2026

Where the label says it

Look right after the ingredient list. Nabisco packs print a line that starts with the word CONTAINS and lists the allergens in capitals. OREO Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, Party Size, 24.16 oz reads: CONTAINS: WHEAT, SOY.

The law allows a second form, with the source in brackets inside the ingredient list, such as whey (from milk). Many labels use both.

What May contain means

A May contain line is a different kind of statement. It warns that a food made on shared equipment could carry traces of an allergen that is not in the recipe. 15 packs in the catalogue carry one, most often for peanut.

The law does not require this line. A pack without it has made no promise about traces. If traces matter to you, use the consumer contact printed on the pack.
