How to read a cookie label

Three lines on the Nutrition Facts panel do most of the work: the serving size, the calories and the added sugars. Here is what each one says on a Nabisco pack.

Reading a cookie label

Start with the serving size

Every number on the panel belongs to one serving, and the serving is smaller than most people guess. On OREO Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, Party Size, 24.16 oz it is 3 cookies (34g). On a snack pack it is the whole pack.

The FDA sets these sizes so that two packs of the same kind of food can be compared line by line.

Serving sizes are standardized to make it easier to compare similar foods; they are provided in familiar units, such as cups or pieces, followed by the metric amount, e.g., the number of grams (g).U.S. Food and Drug Administration, How to Understand and Use the Nutrition Facts Label, read 4 October 2026

What one serving is, aisle by aisle

Calories count per serving, not per pack

A Party Size, 24.16 oz tray holds about 20 servings at 160 calories each. Eat a third of the tray and you have had six or seven servings.

The panel gives the size of a serving so you can do that sum. It does not tell you how much to eat.

It is not a recommendation of how much you should eat or drink.U.S. Food and Drug Administration, How to Understand and Use the Nutrition Facts Label, read 4 October 2026

Added sugars, and what counts as a lot

Total sugars include the sugar that fruit or milk brings. Added sugars are the part put in during baking, and the panel lists them on their own line.

The FDA ties that line to a daily reference of 50 grams. Its rule of thumb reads the percent column: 5% or less is low, 20% or more is high.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting calories from added sugars to less than 10 percent of total calories per day.U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Added Sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label, read 4 October 2026
For example, if you consume a 2,000 calorie daily diet, that would be 200 calories or 50 grams of added sugars per day.U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Added Sugars on the Nutrition Facts Label, read 4 October 2026
